Thomas D Wright has 37+ years of experience in Sonoma County family law mediation and litigation. He can lend a trained eye to a mediating party’s individual needs and disputed family law issues. He can help the parties to open up and discuss their own priorities, fears, and chosen outcomes. Mr. Wright can help guide the parties in maintaining the focus on selecting their mutual goals to arrive at an acceptable overall settlement and a written, enforceable court order.
Over 40 Years of California Legal Experience
Thomas Wright was a California State Bar Board Certified Family Law Specialist for 24 years until he ceased his FAMILY LAW LITIGATION practice in 2020. Mr. Wright has continued to maintain a license to practice law in California from June 1983 through the present (2025).
Decades of Family Law Expertise
During his career as a Family Law Attorney, Mr. Wright has tried to verdict in excess of 50 contested family law court trials. From 1983 through 2020, Mr.Wright negotiated or argued hundreds of contested OSC/RFO/law and motion family law matters. Over his entire career, Mr. Wright has actively participated in some 200 mediations, either as an attorney, a private mediator, a private judge, or as a Sonoma County Superior Court Judge pro tem.
Trained in Leading Mediation Techniques
Mr. Wright completed the Gary Friedman Mediation Training (40 hrs) and the Advanced Gary Friedman Mediation Training. Mr Wright also completed the Harvard Negotiation Training, “Getting to Yes,” and the Collaborative Law Training, both in the Bay Area.
Tom’s Community and Professional Service to Sonoma County has spanned over 40 years.
Sonoma County Judge Pro-Tem Volunteer Settlement Conference Judge from the mid- 1980’s through the present (July, 2025)
Santa Rosa Salvation Army Board member for seven years in 1990’s and early 2000’s. Community Service Activities including but not limited to; Food Service, Temporary Housing, Emergency Services and fund- raising. Tom worked again as a board member and active member of the Transitional Housing Committee in 2024.
Cardinal Newman High School Boosters Board Member: Five years (1998- 2002) Service activities for the high school: related to student activities, fund- raising and student events.
Sonoma County Family Law Committee;(1980’s through early 2000’s) worked as a member of this committee (and sub-committees) for different tenures over the above years, helping plan events, support local bar programs and provide MCLE classes for family law continuing education.
Sonoma County Museum (1980s) Two- year Board member for the support of Art and History in Sonoma County; Planning events and supporting local Sonoma County Artists, and Sonoma County Local History.

Mr. Wright has been a professor of Community Property Law at Empire College School of Law for the academic years of 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.
Mr. Wright was honored in Family Law as having a “Career of Distinction” for 2023, 2024 and 2025 by the nationally recognized organization, “Careers of Distinction.”
Mr. Wright was honored by Martindale-Hubbell as AV PREEMINENT in the category of Family Law in specific areas of professional ability and general ethics every year beginning in 2016 through and including 2025. (The last ten consecutive years)
Mr. Wright was honored by Northern California SUPERLAWYERS in FAMILY LAW from 2007 through 2015. (Nine consecutive years). For the above years, Mr. Wright’s firm was featured in Northern California SUPERLAWYERS MAGAZINE, LAW AND POLITICS, and SAN FRANCISCO MAGAZINE.
Mr. Wright is a member of the “Richard Sangster American Inns of Court” as “Master of the Bench.” He has been active in that national/international organization from October 2000 through late 2020 and during the years 2023 and continuing into 2025, inclusive.
